These Microsoft Surface Books are BRAND NEW, however the packaging has been opened to include a Microsoft-Approved 3rd Party Surface Compatible Stylus. Fear not, the Surface Book still comes with a 1 Year Microsoft Warranty.

All dual core chips. These are very premium designed devices, but the jump in performance from dual to quad core mobile processors is night and day.
Have it and use it as a workstation replacement. Does the job well but gets... hot. After about 1.5 years of such abuse the battery in the dock expanded and popped the casing and the battery in the tablet expanded a bit and began to warp the screen such that it wouldn't lie flat on a surface. Complained to MS online customer support and I'd have to send them the laptop and be without one for a few weeks, so instead I went to an MS store and they gave me a replacement dock+tablet straight away.
Dated hardware.... but quality build...

This is the original on refurb. They have a 2 and will hopefully come out with more. I have the 2 and like it a lot as a student. It's not super powerful, but it works well for my note taking, circuit simulation (LTspice), pcb routing (Eagle), and some simple games like FTL or Minecraft. I have a desktop at home for more intensive things. It's a solid computer for students that want to use it for notes, documents, and programming. It wouldn't be a good fit if you needed to do 3D modeling, but it works for all of my needs.

Even the most expensive variant? I'm on the market for a decent laptop/tablet and was considering this...

I've been using an i5 256gb model for 2.25 years at my job as my day to day workstation that I can undock and take with me when needed. It most lives docked to dual monitors. Other than some dock wonkyness (flashing screens is a thing that happens every year or two for a week until I reset the dock and follow some other online recommendations), I've loved it, and it's great solid hardware.

Dual core is no problem for even intensive excel spreadsheeting with millions of rows and pretty intensive calculations. It can get hot when I'm working and the institutional virus scanning program is working, but it's rare. I would get another, and did order another for the wife when she needed a new computer.
