I don't know if anyone knows the difference between Rachio 3 and Rachio 3e. They look the same to me except 3e looks much cheaper @$149 instead of $179 for the rachio 3.
I think the 3e is new. It looks like it's a feature stripped version of the 3. The 3 has "Weather Intelligence Plus features and upgraded weather forecasting."
From the tech specs section it looks like the 3e strips Apple HomeKit support too.
Quick compare on Home Depot shows R3e is missing some features:
Rachio R3e vs. R3
Program Type: "Interval Setting,Multi-Zone Programming,Programmable,Rain Delay" vs. "Calendar Setting,Interval Setting,Multi-Zone Programming,Odd/Even Day Program,Programmable,Rain Delay,Schedule Programming"

Smart Home: "Alexa, Alexa, Google, Google Assistant, IFTTT, Samsung SmartThings, Siri" vs. "Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Control4, Google, Google Assistant, Nexia, Samsung SmartThings, Siri"
Some of the things contradict each other like the 3e not having voice control but it connects with Alexa and Google Assistant which doesn't make sense so these differences don't sound right. Will contact rachio Customer support to get the official answer...

I contacted their customer support to ask yesterday and haven't heard back. Seems it's brand new and the product comparison page just says "coming soon".
The R3e Smart Sprinkler Controller offers a lower-priced entry point for customers looking for a weather-based smart sprinkler controller. The R3e lacks the following features available on the Rachio 3:
Weather Intelligence™ Plus
Flex Daily
Yard Map
HomeKit
Future premium software features
Any wireless integrations

Just got exactly the same email from Rachio. Seems like it is a replacement for the Gen 2 basically so they can still sell a cheaper product. Has all the same features :-) as the Gen 2. Not worth it, I guess as you can wait for a deal for the 3 and pay $20-30 extra to get all those features or get the Gen 2 for way cheaper if you don't care about the missing features. Not sure who the market is for the 3e then.

(standard app included with purchase)
And the 3 has this:
Rachio 3 is equipped with premium Weather Intelligence™ Plus and is compatible with Rachio Thrive.
Could there be differences in what you can do in the app(s) between the 3 and 3e?
That's fine for me. I only have 4 zones. Also, the regular 3 comes with an 8 zones model also for $80+ more.
