In short, SurePost is a discounted shipping service offered by UPS to shippers that allows the USPS to deliver the package to the resident. (The 'last mile' of a delivery being most costly to UPS because (currently) it can't be automated, requires a worker, and expense to get it to your home. ) Cheaper for shipper, but longer time to get there.
In long:
To do this, your package moves around in UPS's logistic system. (Trucks, Aircraft, etc) bulk with other packages. Then, UPS will deliver your package locally to the U.S. Post Office, who will then take it to your home. UPS saves money because even taking packages to the Post Office can be done in batches. They get a different rate than you would get at Post Office because the packages are presorted and presented to the local Post Office ready to go. The U.S. Postal Service generally will drive past every mailbox each day. So having an extra package already ready to drop at a mailbox is a small marginal cost. Anyway, some of this savings for UPS (not having to take your package the last mile to your house) is passed on to the shipper. The process delays your package because UPS sends it to the Post Office, and then the Post Office brings it to you the next day or so. So, this 'upgrade' means that UPS skips the Post Office part and brings the package directly to you.
That said, UPS has a smart system in place. If its logistic system sees that a package is coming to you by another shipper that is not SurePost but would arrive the same day they would take your SurePost package to the Post Office the system will flag it, and since they would be at your home anyway, they automatically 'upgrade' it for free. Likewise, this 'free upgrade' will happen if a close neighbor gets a package the same day they were expecting to deliver your SurePost to the Post Office because the logistic software will know that the truck will be within feet of your home.
I know you did not ask all of that, but that is why they offer this service. If you get a lot of packages, you will get many of the SurePost upgrades for free.
I use a lot of no-rush shipping options with Amazon. (to get the digital credit) Many of the packages come SurePost so it's nice to get the packages quicker. Although, in a way I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul. (getting credit at Amazon but paying UPS a yearly fee to make them faster). LMAO
Although after ordering I was wondering why I did. With UPS My Choice, FedEx, and USPS memberships you used to be able to go on vacation and have everything held. Now with Amazon delivery they don't have a hold method so I still have to find somebody to watch for packages even with all these different services. Oh well...
