TCL sets are awesome sets. If the pic goes out, it's most likely the T-Con board. They are $15-$25 on eBay and easier to swap out than laptop memory. TCL makes their rear panels super easy to access. You can get all 3 boards for around $45 shipped. It's more hassle dealing with a warranty than fixing yourself. And with the millions sold, there's always parts available. I fixed my 55S405 for $12 after my CC gave me a run around for a second year warranty. They wanted me to take the tv to an authorized repair shop an hour away.
So I bought a 65R615 for $499 and figured I'd fix the 55S405 myself. A month afterwards, the CC company asked me if I replaced the 55S405 and said sent a receipt, and then sent me a check for $335 upon receipt. I also sent the CC a copy of the $12 part I bought. They never asked if I got it working.
Warranties are like rebates. It takes 2-3 times to work and a lot of hassle. But fixing yourself on these sets is cheap and painless.
If your pic goes out but you have sound, it's the T-Con board.
I can think of a few reasons. Let's see:
Doesn't trust refurbs
Knows about Walmart's pathetic reputation for reliably shipping TVs without breaking them
Doesn't need a 50" TV
Personally I'm going with #3.

Honestly I would pick up a 40 or 43 at this price to try to use as a PC monitor. But 50 is too big, no way it will fit on my desk.
Costco sells a 43" TCL new for $220 I think.
Honestly though... why would someone return a TV if it wasn't defective in some way? And how does one "refurbish" dead pixels or other serious problems?

But the price is right.
Yes price is right. Returns are mostly due to change of minds most of the times.

4 series
I believe it's a 4 Series. Though I say that having only looked at the product number.
