What's new with you since Covid 19?

7,092 3,609 March 21, 2020 at 11:47 PM in Chat
Just wondering what (besides the obvious) how everyone's been impacted. Work has all but halted for me, other than some online reselling that I do. Also, my stepdaughter will be moving in within a few weeks, since she's being laid off. It will actually give her a chance to make a career change and save for a house. We are planning a bigger garden, too.

So, what's new with you?

So, today was my great niece's 15th birthday, and we did a neighborhood parade in front of her house. We threw presents and snacks at her, like Mardi Gras floats. It was really funny. We also had a social distancing birthday party for our neighbor on Friday. We alk stayed at least 6' apart, brought our own drinks and snacks, and because we were on golf carts, it was easy to run home and use out own bathrooms. FaceTime and video calls on messenger help my friends and i stay in touch.

How have y'all socialized?

Wow!! That sounds so clever and fun. I would want to do a party like that, even if there was no Coronavirus laugh out loud

I call, text, and email my cousin constantly. Our parents were very close and we also tolerate each other really well. I'll have to break quarantine rules for an emergency dental appointment because you need someone to drive you, but otherwise, been okay alone.

If anyone is still looking for an easy face mask, I sewed this by hand: https://buttoncounter.com/2018/01...-tutorial/ Needle and thread are available at many supermarkets in little end aisle sections. If you need fabric, head to Etsy and search for "fat quarters." A fat quarter is precut fabric used for quilting. It's super cheap and the perfect size for a couple of masks. You can also choose a nice pattern or basic black.

For the binding (cover unfinished edges) I used this instruction: https://sewmasks4cincy.org/wp-con...lastic.pdf Couldn't find elastic anywhere so I took it from a CPR pocket mask. You can sew fabric ties on or use rubber bands.

No returns at many stores, nobody thought about holding merchandise
in back for 72 hours to let virus die.

One way aisles , so I have to walk a 5k to get my groceries

😠😠😠😠😠😠

Yeah, limited customers in store and 1 way aisles - is that really necessary at this point?

Well... I'm sick and my doctor said it's suspect for Rona but she couldn't test me. You need a fever of at least 103 for it.

Even with a flu shot, plenty of handwashing, and rarely leaving the house, I've always been a magnet for all kinds of viral infections and they stay with me for a month on average. I figured Rona will kill me or make me a carrier. Started feeling sick last Saturday which was a surprise as I've left the house maybe 6 times since the start of February.

Sunday had me cycling through every symptom you could imagine. A lot of people here in the epicenter don't have respiratory symptoms and I didn't either. By Sunday night I was so sick going to sleep was too scary. By noon on Monday, I felt a bit better but it's very slow going. Saw my doctor via a video appointment. We're both perplexed.

It feels like a bad case of the flu. Viruses don't hit me so hard in such a short time. Maybe I fared better this time because my fruit and veggie intake is way up, no more meds, rarely eat processed food anymore. Back to bed.
Just catching up in threads and seeing this...

hug I hope you are feeling better.

It's been nothing but up for an hour, back to bed for several more hours. Hoping that changes soon.

I'm in US but originally from the UK so tend to keep in touch with what's happening over there. The BBC showed this science documentary [youtube.com] this week in the UK and it's pretty ominous. If you want to know what we're up against you should watch this - I have yet to see anything as revealing in the US. Bottom line: we're f'ed until we get a vaccine and that's 1 year out. Best we can do before that is test and trace rigorously, but we're a ways away from even that.

Good luck people, keep your distance and stay at home if you can.

Yeah, I think the it's a bit more serous than most think. I've heard several thoughts on different scenarios and one that stuck with me was that it will taper off some in the summer because we tend to be outside and in less contact and because we're more active, our immune systems may be functioning better, but in the Fall, when kids go back to school and cold weather brings us back indoors, that things may erupt again. I think we are still a ways from being done with this scourge.

I'm very brand loyal when it comes to groceries and it's been hard having to buy my second or third choice.

Also just had a robocall from my workplace confirming that we are considered a "critical infrastructure supplier" and will remain in operation for the foreseeable future. Kind of glad the paychecks will still be coming for now but a little uneasy about the potential exposure to so many others.
Turns out the foreseeable future was about a month. Due to so much manufacturing already shut down across the country, the lack of demand for steel has my company idling two of its iron mines, which means I will most likely be laid off after next week. Not all that unexpected, but I thought maybe the economic repercussions would take a little longer to get back to us. At this point it looks like a relatively short two-month shutdown but obviously in the end that will depend on the rest of the country getting back to work.

I'm in a pretty good position to be able to ride it out for quite a while, and I was happy to learn this morning that my health insurance will remain intact at no cost to me for a year if things were to stay bad for a longer period of time.

So much for being an "essential worker" laugh out loud

Glad to hear your health insurance will continue. Hopefully your industry will be able to bounce back fairly quickly. Sounds like it is one that is pretty essential, so hopefully it won't be long.

Anybody starting to ration?

I haven't, but now that stay-at-home orders extend into May, I'm starting to think about doing that, cause who knows how longer it'll go, or may this is the new norm.

I can still got to to the grocery of course, but really really trying to minimize doing that. What's your strategy?

Maybe once every 2 weeks, stock up for 3 weeks to a month's worth?

I admit that I'm a piece of crap who can't commit to things I start and have very little consistency, however, with the conavirus and being forced to stay home, I watched some videos from a YouTube who gave great advice and I feel I'm turning my life around currently. I've started to build my better habits since two days ago and I feel I'll be able to consistently maintain these habits.
What kind of videos?
