About how many gallons can you put through this? I understand it depends on water hardness, but I'm on nyc tap.

I haven't used it yet (just ordered), but the manual says: This product is meant to last 10-12 rinses with an average TDS reading of 200 ppm.

You only get 11 washes out of a resin filter and that is probably estimate of someone that rinses quickly, so you might get less. You can buy a 2 pack of the Resin Filters from Costco for $80 plus tax. The kit from Costco only includes one resin filter :-(. Cheaper and quicker and easier to do the drive thru car was at Costco for under $8 a wash.

Because $86(with tax for the two bags) for 22 washes is $4 a wash. Then there is the cost of the unit itself.
