The movie was a great retelling of the book. Nice animated feature. Roald Dahl didn't write feel good children's lit. Look at Matilda, The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG. He wrote cautionary tales in line with the Brothers Grimm.

Just tried to watch this with kids on Disney + yesterday. Pretty terrible, not at all what I remember, and not for young kids. Tim Burton is a weird dude.

Tim may be weird to you, but he didn't write this story...

I love the book. The movie is an interpretation. The women in the beginning are hard to watch. And the animation is all his style.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but Tim DOES like to communicate a vibe with his characters.

Have you seen the Corpse Bride?

The more jarring a character appears, often communicates the true depths in/of their inner natures.
