$3 for popular ebook is always nice.

Separately, I tried to read this in high school and found it very dense, like the Bible. It's basically the Bible of Lord of The Rings universe, I did not find it similar to Fellowship of the Ring. Just a heads up.
March 25 is International Tolkien Reading Day. More Tolkien books are on sale for today:

The Fall of Gondolin [amazon.com] $2.99

Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth [amazon.com] $2.99

Beren and Lúthien [amazon.com]$2.99

The Children of Húrin [amazon.com] $2.99
I'm a pretty avid reader and really liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit was ok, definitely more enjoyable when I was younger. The Silmarillion was a chore to slog through. About half way through, I decided I would finish just to say I did it, but it was not enjoyable. It felt like work and I remember very little of it because there was just so much in there...

This sums up exactly how I felt, I was also in high school at the time. I could not get into this book. For perspective I've read hobbit/LOTR several times over. Love those books.

I didn't read Silmarillion till I was 41. It read well then and I can see how it would be very dense when younger. A bit of life experience is needed on this one prior to.

Unfortunately, the Silmarillion is not even as good as being dense like trying to read the Bible. It's more like trying to read the especially tertiary and obscure genealogies in the Bible. This "book" was maybe a necessary personal task for Tolkien to build his Middle Earth universe, but it isn't for reading.

Read the comments. The book is basically a chronology of the history of middle earth. Very dry.
