I don't know all thenins and outs of the oil industry but I think synthetic oil is made with natural gas. If we stop fracking and domestic oil extraction, then we also stop extracting natural gas. Though oil is cheap, I'm guessing the lack of natural gas extraction (biproduct sort of due to oil extraction) will cause natural gas prices to spike, potentially making synthetic oil more expensive.

Only one brand uses natural gas constantly. But it's indirect. They collect byproduct, essentially the same hydrocarbon molecules whether ng or API base stock, some other brands toggle based on supply.
I change my oil & filter ~ 5K miles and both brands come out pretty clean - much cleaner than with my GTI's 2.0 TSI at least, despite the oil filter being half the size with the Mazda (granted, the GTI has double the miles and is driven harder).

Also using it in my cx5 along with the Bosch filters that were $1.5/ea a few months back. Truly a cheap car to maintain
