Its all dependent on temperature rise across the water heater. You should keep the unit set point at 120F so a 67F rise would be able to deliver 4.5 gpm. This is based on a ground water temperature of 53F which can vary based on where you live and the time of year. If 53 is your low ground water temperature, this would be enough for 2 showers and something like a dishwasher to be running AT THE SAME TIME. Our normal hot water usage for a shower is around 1.6-1.7 gpm of hot water (remainder is the cold mixing to get to the desired temperature). We have a 11.2 gpm tankless that is a competitor of this brand and have had it a few years. It's been nice during the troubling/uncertain/challenging/etc times because I can take an unlimited length shower and never have to worry about running out of hot water.

On the indoor/outdoor, the outdoor unit is directly vented and has slotted holes in the units to allow for airflow. The indoor unit has a pipe to vent it outdoors.
The way it vents out. For indoors you have to also purchase hardware to vent the gas out of your house where outdoors are already outside and vent out the side instead of the top. Also if you live where it freezes, you can't buy an outside one and use it in the winter.

whats the main diff between indoor and outdoor? mounting location? We've got 4 boys so I'm wondering if this 8.4gpm unit might be undersized for our family

I would assume either one would have to be mounted on studs, brick, concrete, etc.

Mine did for warranty support, but I just make sure to do normal maintenance and haven't had an issue with mine in the 5 years I've owned it. Its almost 0 maintenance if you have a water softener.

Anyone else find it odd the 65 and 80 gallon hybrids have the same energy usage listed. I guess at a certain point surface area to lose heat through is the same so no additional losses.

Venting, mainly. Outdoor units don't need piping for intake/exhaust air... but I imagine the outdoor units may be better sealed also.

The outdoor is meant to be outside and vents off a grate in the very front. We use these at a children's summer camp. I use a 9.4 in a single story building with 6 showers that can all be used at the same time. I use 6.4 in building with two showers.

What's the difference between the 2 Outdoor Platinum High Efficiency tankless heaters for $1069.99? They have different model #'s. Same price. Couldn't tell difference.

I had the same question.... then i noticed that one was actually propane and one was natural gas even though I filtered on natural gas.
