I've have this saw and it's great for a DIY'er. I built a 150sqft deck using it, and it performed great.
The biggest shortcoming is the on-axis motor which gets in the way for any smaller work, but correcting that issue usually involves a much higher end saw.

DEFINITELY get some kind of stand to go with it. Anyone who is trying to hold boards in place while using the saw on the floor doesn't realize how much better the tool is when integrated with a proper stand. I have the folding RIGID stand which goes on sale for $99 a couple of times per year and can't recommend it enough.

I got this when on sale for $129 over the summer. I also got a stand from DTO. They have certified pre-owned for $40 and factory blemished for $90.

Here is a link to a CPO stand.

I bought almost the same model a couple of years back (laser instead of LED) and I have a problem with the slide to blade alignment. I didn't discover it until I was out of warranty so it was too late. Basically the blade is not on plane with the sliding motion and cannot be adjusted. So you can either square the fence against the blade for chop cuts, or square it to the sliding motion. I have my fence now square to the slide, so even if I'm cutting 1x2s I have to use the sliding motion.

Once you receive it set it up and square the blade to the fence with the slide all the way in (as per chop cut), once everything is tightened up, pull the slide back and check the blade travel. If part of the blade separates or digs into the square then your blade is not parallel to the slide. There is no known adjustment for this that I have been able to find.

I have a Harbor Freight that is pretty much similar. It's adequate for most uses--would this Ryobi represent an upgrade, or would it be about on par?

This!^^^ I have this saw and stand combo and absolutely love it. I used to be the guy who would use my (previous) miter saw on the ground with whatever scrap I could find to support the ends of the board I was cutting. It sucked.

Also, you don't have to fold up the stand to move it. Just pick up the non-wheeled end and you can roll it around wherever you need to relocate it to.
Yep have this same combo and love it!

Have had it for a year and it's a great saw. Cuts smoother faster than my previous Craftsman.

How does this compare to the Harbor Freight Chicago version?

Thank you for posting this. I just bought one. 50 shipped. I was thinking of getting a WEN but this should do just fine. Thanks again.

Dang, I was just about to order one for $40.
I ordered one from them and got it with no issues. As stated already, their inventory fluctuates, but I've never had any real issues with DTO. Just slow shipping times over the holidays.

Try your luck. Their inventory does go in and out of stock frequently. Just makes me laugh that within 24 hours of the saying they couldn't find any---it's been reactivated on their site
i second this. i was tracking the miter saws on DTO site for a while, and i kept noticing the $40 pre-owned and $60 blemished stands constantly coming in and out of stock. just wait a few days.

I've got this saw, and it is pretty good for the average homeowner. I've been somewhat disappointed by it's lack of ability to get a super straight cut. Depending on the material, it will slice/move in as the blade lowers, leaving an unlevel cut surface behind. This can be alleviated by 'scoring' the board over multiple passes. I also got it on a $129 sale, so the value is definitely there!

Soooooo tempting. I have the 10" Ryobi saw that does not slide and it has been great for DIY weekend use. It works perfectly and I have absolutely no reason to replace it other then the occasional larger piece I want to cut where this would be so nice. Arrrgh!

I bought the HF version first and had a hard time getting it setup properly... also seemed to be missing pieces and the blade guard was crooked and just didn't seem well assembled. Exchanged for another with similar issues. The Ryobi seemed much higher quality to me and I am happy with it.

Correct, single bevel. All the double bevels i've seen are quite a bit more. I have a Kobalt brand miter saw that's mostly identical. Should fit your needs just fine.
Thanks. Pulled the trigger. So now I've done the easy part of committing to a home project - buying what I need. Now let's see if the saw sits there like that POE security system I found on SD system that I bought 2 1/2 years ago lol.

I have an older model (non sliding, no laser, no ruler on the fence) I have been looking at these for a long time. I couldn't pass on this one. I use my other one all of the time. This will be a great upgrade. Although I am worried that it is going to be too big to be portable. I carry mine to where I need the cuts most of the time.

Will this cut thru 4x4s? I want to use this for firewood and want to make sure it'll cut small logs without having to flip
