Yep, SMR drive. Serve The Home did a great article on it but the TL;DR; is don't use these in a RAID/ZFS configuration (which is most NAS setups).

WD is probably seeing a huge drop in sales now for < 8TB HDs and for good reason.. I wish they didn't join the SMR dark side.. they could have at least left the Red drives to be CMR.

the 4TB reds could drop to $50 and people probably still wouldn't buy them because of SMR. and I sure hope they don't bring SMR to 8TB 12TB 14TB etc.
