You can find the other thread on here where Gold was on sale where multiple comments go into great detail on how. But basically you buy 3 years of Gold (the most Microsoft allows at once) then you get a month of Ultimate. This converts all 3 years of Gold into Ultimate.

Ok so I was on the same boat of confusion as you. Here's what I understood and what worked for me. I was NOT a Xbox game pass ultimate user. I had a 12 month Xbox live card that I redeemed. Now there's a upgrade to game pass ultimate for $1. So i did that and during that process some messages popped up telling me that they would honor my upgrade and turn my regular Xbox live to ultimate game pass for as long as my current Xbox live was valid (in this case the 12 month live card that I redeemed). From what I understood others are saying to take advantage of this method and buy 1-2 years of Xbox live BEFORE you upgrade to the 1 ultimate games pass to fully take advantage of Xbox offer to upgrade for a dollar.

Because you get gamepass free for those 3yrs. Like felon said, Microsoft converts gold to ultimate which is both. Don't leave money on the table. These guys don't pay taxes, they better be giving something free.
