Erich Von Stroheim is amazing as the Camp Commandant. Although he started his career as a film Director, he is more known for his acting career. He played the character of Max Von Mayerling in "Sunset Boulevard".

"La Grande Illusion" (Grand Illusion) was directed by Jean Renoir, Son of Impressionist Painter Pierre Auguste Renoir and is considered by most a masterpiece!

I hadn't realized until pulling it out again recently that Grand Illusion was Criterion DVD release number 1. Seems fitting

It's a masterpiece period, among the greatest movies of all time (like RULES OF THE GAME). I just recently watched ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT for the first time and it is also still a great movie- the battle scenes are still exciting to watch and accurate (so far as I can tell, having read many books on WWI). Sad that a classic novel on the horror and futility of war, read by millions at the time, written by a German, and made into an important movie all by 1930 so that its lessons had well over a decade to be absorbed had so little power to stop what was coming next...

I've watched this film no less than 15 times and the Grand Illusion is nothing less than a masterpiece. One of the first great epic films whose style and techniques have been borrowed ever since, it was way ahead of its time in terms of cinematography, aesthetics, and story development. The story is both of personal struggles and the crisis of societal upheaval of that period. The details of allegorical props, the deft gestures of actors and subtle dialogue touches alone make this one of the greatest films ever made. Nearly every great epic film since The Grand Illusion seems like n obvious derivative.
