Rock solid deal if you don't want the extended versions and all the goodies. Some people don't. I, for one, won't Shire away from a good deal.
Rent short versions when they are on sale for $1.99, see if you like them, then splurge for extended cuts.

When I was young *Dang it, it's been almost 20 years since 1st one*, I always saw my friends, brothers, cousins watch this movie, and it felt like a slow moving long boring movie, until one day when I had to work while everyone was on vacation, I decided to get the extended editions and watch them 1 movie per day. When I watched the extended editions, I could not imagine cutting out any part of the movie. I tried to find and identify scenes or dialogs that could have been excluded from extended editions, I could not find any. To me, the only way to enjoy these movies will always be extended editions. They are great, find them and get them. You will not be disappointed.

However, if you are accustomed to non stop hyper active action flicks and you constantly want fights, fast moving scenes, less substance and more action, I am not sure if these epic LOTR movies will be enjoyable. The extended editions are like rock opera, or +3 hour master piece symphonies, whereas the recent action flicks are like 4 minute singles, still enjoyable but not much weight to them.

That's what I'm torn on. I've never seen these movies (nor the Hobbit Trilogy). I've missed this deal for the past couple of holiday seasons. I want to jump on it but in every thread of this deal, people are always praising the extended cuts. That makes me want to see the extended cut as my first watch. But then again, $10 for the 3 theatrical flicks is slick.

Thanks for that. I'd rather buy the trilogy for $10 versus rent the 3 for $6 (simply because I like the physical copy). But given your tips, I'm going to wait on a great deal for the extended version. I really enjoy character driven plots. There's no way I'll be able to sit through a movie for 3 hours but I can just divide it into viewing segments. Sounds like it's very much worth it.

I cannot believe this set came out over ten years ago.

I think the theatrical versions are better. The extended are worth a watch, but those scenes were deleted for reasons.

I see what you did there... nod

Great movies for either version you get. Personally, I'd splurge for the Extended versions but I also read the books when I was young and totally geeked out when these came out in theaters (more giddy school boy rather than dress up / cosplay nod).
