Spotted this at my local OD a few days ago. Both Green Mountain 'Dark Magic' and 'Breakfast Blend' 18oz bags of whole bean coffee were $3 each. Only the whole bean versions. Not the ground ones. So about $2.70 / pound. The sell by dates were from December '19 for the Dark Magic and Sept '20 for Breakfast Blend, but for the price I picked up all the 5 bags in store, with my store rewards. I figure whole beans last a good while vs ground anyway. Only tried the breakfast blend so far and seemed pretty good to me.
I checked Brickseek yesterday and ended up driving around to three other close together stores and picked up another $40 worth, using up additional rewards I had. Most stores had 2-3 bags of each in stock. Turns out the sell by dates were pretty much along the same lines. Dark Magic Dec '19, Breakfast Blend Sept/Oct '20.
In going around, I also found some Caribou Coffee 'Daybreak Morning Blend' K-cup 24 packs in one store for $4 / box. Something not seen in any of the other stores, so probably not widely available. Picked those up too to try.

However the beans really do need to be fresh, even if whole bean. 6 months old is okay, but over a year is not worth it unless they are free or you really need to save money.

i'm able to keep freshly roasted beans over 2 months
at room temps - before the flavor notes begin to turn.

I have a hard time believing that. I have a small air tight jar with a one way air valve and even then i can tell when the coffee is old.
