Yup, I tried this out with the Betty Crocker version of these and it worked out great. I used ramekins that were about 2/3rds of a pack and just eyeballed it...no problem. It works well for portion control. I don't know what magic powder they put in these things, but it's amazing that something so quick and easy comes out so good.

aren't boxes of cake $1 frequently? And a cake is larger than 4 mugs.

Or you can just do 2 tb each of butter or oil, flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and milk. A pinch of salt, microwave for 1 minute and you're good to go...just takes an extra 1 minute to measure out the ingredients....and most people keep those ingredients on hand ....except maybe the cocoa powder...which cost 2$ for 8oz....(enough to make more than 20 of them)

I think its the powdered eggs. But IMO making these yourself with regular box cake mix comes out basically as good. Neither are perfect, they end up too moist or too dry. LPT to butter the mug for better edges and use milk instead.

I bought these when the 4pks were like $1 S&S a while back. Meh. They're okay. It's nice for something super fast and shelf stable but it's just okay. Not good. I always feel I need to add stuff to it to make it better...more walnuts, a little butter so it's less dry, some chocolate chips, etc. At that point, I feel like I'd be better off buying a $1 box of cake mix and using one of the many online blog recipes for easy mug cakes with box mixes. And you get more choice in variety.
And I mean, yes, you could just mix flour, cocoa, butter, sugar, blah blah but man...if I'm going to get that much crap out of the pantry/fridge, I'll just make a whole damn cake. I want something I can just throw together in seconds and nuke. You could make up baggies of it, I guess, preportioned. But at that point, again, I'll use box mix because forget that plain chocolate cake noise...I could have carrot cake, spice cake, pineapple cake, strawberry cake....
