A few things to note:
1. The watch's total diameter is 40mm, but there is a black border around the "usable" touchscreen portion, so it wears smaller than you might think when the screen is on. It looks like this is true of just about every smartwatch out there, so it's not a negative for this specific watch. In the traditional watch space, a 40mm case size is a good middle-ground and a 44mm case would be considered large for most people (lugs overhanging your wrist); however, when it comes to smartwatches, it might actually wear smaller than you'd expect due to the full face not being utilized. That said, I can't say how it compares to the 44mm model since I've never handled one.
2. I have a Samsung Galaxy watch, so its integration is as ideal as possible with it. Can't comment on how well it works with other Android phones.
3. From what I understand, the primary differences between this and the Active 2 is the addition of an SpO2 sensor. This watch (Active 1) receives the same OS update as the Active 2, so it can now use the same rotating virtual bezel function as the Active 2. This is where the black border on the screen comes into play, which is rather clever. I think I'd still prefer a physical bezel that can rotate, but that's apparently been eliminated by Samsung on the Active line.
4. The watch has a standard 20mm lug width, so no weird connectors or odd sizes. This makes buying replacement straps a cinch and lets you customize the watch to your liking for a reasonable cost.
The internal hardware is same in all gens of Samsung watched since the S3 frontier which in my opinion is still the best looking out of all. The Galaxy Watch 46mm has the biggest battery 470 mah compared to the 3xx on the other watches. Also since this watch active they have a newer heart rate sensor that is supposed to be capable of doing an ecg but FDA never approved it and so Samsung never really enabled it.
In my opinion I prefet the Galaxy watch 42 and 46 mm due to the rotating bezel more dressier looks, bigger battery and 22mm bands which are not only more comfortable but also looks great and far more easier to find( most 22 mm fossil bands fits). Only thing missing is the updated heard rate sensor with ecg which is not even enabled in the newer watch. Also due to the rotating bezel and the recessed screen the glass was much more protected and the flat screen allowed tempered glass screen protector. The curved glass on the actives and the colored bodies actually pretty easily scartches and you can't buff off the scratches on the metal surface with some metal polish is because it is painted. That's my overall experience of owning almost every Samsung watch!

I would recommend the 44mm for men with a normal wrist size.

Fitbit is more for fitness and battery life where Galaxy Active is more for technology and apps. Both will give you similar alerts
I prefer the 40mm since I play(ed) sports like bball and flag football so I didn't want to hit ppl with the watch by accident
