Good laptop but non-HD screen is a deal killer It's ridiculous to use non-HD screens at these times.

You can turn that off though.

One of my biggest tech regrets was getting a 768p laptop for schoolwork -- word processing, research, collaborative work, etc. is cramped and lousy (especially on a 15"). Anything less than 1080p is simply not worth it in my opinion.

You can turn S mode off in 2 minutes. Easy to find online.
It's a one-way street. Meaning you can't go back to S mode afterwards. Make sure you know you won't be going back.

Well for that pricepoint it's perfectly acceptable.

Is there a workaround for that?
Yes make sure you're signed to the laptop with a Microsoft account. If not sign in, make you're signed into the Microsoft Windows Store also, and in the search bar type in "S mode", it will prompt you to the upgrade option. Follow the steps and you'll be out of S Mode. It is irreversible unless you reset the computer back to factory.

Dual core, 720p display, 0.3 MP webcam is meh. Pass.

Probably TN panel too

I still recommend refurb motile 14 at eBay vipoutlet $300. 1080p IPS, 256GB, 8GB RAM, Ryzen 5 quad core 3500u. 2.5lb only. Windows 10.

Don't buy garbage people.
Very true. However you said don't buy garbage, yet recommend a refurbished. Refurbished computers are a hit or miss. You either get one thats perfect or you'll get a lemon. And refurbished usually isn't that much cheaper compared to newer models unless the refurbished model is several models old. And at that point it's on the way to become more obsolete sooner than later.

I will happily pay an extra $50 for FHD screen. Why they keep putting HD panel on a 15"??
It's $300. It's entirely proper for its pricepoint. If you want HD you have to pay for it.

True, my point is the screen is HD because HD is 720p. I agree it's not enough and my 4 years old Acer that I bought for 400$ has1080P display, so lower than 1080p on laptop should not offered in 2020 just like 4gb of ram
Everything is at a price point. There will be entry level, mid range, high end, and premium laptops. Same applies to gaming laptops. Makes no sense putting all that technology in a sub $500 laptop and not making it profitable. But you'd be surprised. Some people are unwilling to pay more than $250 for a laptop so that's what they get stuck with 🤷🏾 ♂️

With these specs on an Apple it would be $899.
$999. Look at the new MacBook Air, entry level is an i3 processor.... Pathetic. But Apple fans are Apple fans. They don't care about technology.

If I connect this to the TV, can it play 1080-4k smoothly?
It can stream 4K, but it won't display 4K. It's a 1366x768 resolution. Hook it to a 1080P, 2K, or 4K monitor and you can then view it in quality.

It is HD but not Full HD. It is higher than 720p. The deal breaker is windows S, if you are only using it for internet browsing it's fine. But you cannot download any program from outside of Microsoft store.
Of course by "HD" I meant "Full HD" or 1920×1080 px; I don't like marketing BS like "HD but not FHD" etc. (same as a firewood contractors are using "face cord" or "truckload" instead of perfectly measured and standard - by many states laws - cord, 128 cf).
As for Windows 10 S, I believe you're already read replies here, it's pretty easy upgrade to any Windows 10 version (personally I prefer corporate edition from my MSDN - this edition don't updates so frequently and tested more properly than other).

Well put - these are great school and home use laptops.

The features at this price point; SSD, 8GB including an intel processor with its superior thermal and power mgt are a great value.

250GB SSD is $40 nowadays. There isn't a single reason why any manufacturer makes one without. This isn't a luxury item anymore, it's basic. Every computer has to have one. Upgrading to SSD/cloning a drive takes 30-45 mins tops.

If you have a computer that doesn't have SSD today, you are living in 2005.

is this the same as what was posted a few weeks ago? I might return and get some money back if so.

I mainly only use my laptop for web browsing and use Citrix to remote into my work PC, would this be sufficient or should I keep the office depot one that was a couple hundred more.

720p on a 15.6" screen is just unacceptable even for a basic user. It should be at least 900p, if not 1080p. Otherwise it's a good configuration at a good price.

ditto... BB is not shipping until June 19. Will cancel BB once this gets picked up from Walmart.
Best Buy version is 1080 FHD. Not the same specs as this one. The BB version is definitely worth the extra $30
