Yes, this procedure worked in the Wiki for a similar 14-CF000000 worked for me to get the Home version last year. Hopefully it still does.

On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Find the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, then select the Go to the Store link.
Note

Don't select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows. That's a different process that will keep you in S mode.

On the page that appears in the Microsoft Store (Switch out of S mode or a similar page), select the Get button. After you confirm this action, you'll be able to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store.

Are there laptops where you can't?

Seems like a good deal for the price, any major red flags that make this not worth $350?

exactly.. i got in on the HP laptop at Costco when they had the i5 chips in them for $299. of the 4 laptops i picked up, only 2 were easy to switch out of S mode. the other two, i spent countless hours troubleshooting before getting them to work.

I'm getting one for my daughter, my father in law and dad both have a similar model (less $, less ram...) From previous years. It's a very solid laptop, light weight, backlight keys, for general use it's super quick (SSD helps a lot with that), long battery, fast charging, IPS display is beautiful and supports HDR.

the costco description says this: "An optional one-way switch out of S mode to Windows 10 Home is available."

is it really that simple?

It is not a physical button or switch so no, but not hard. Read this thread for more info. Someone discusses another thread with a wiki. Or there is always google. I am sure there are instructions on Microsoft's site.

I suggest searching Youtube for upgrade directions. My last 2 HPs have required extra disassembly compared to simply removing the back cover. Had to remove the keyboard too. I am not getting another HP that needs any upgrades. Also, there may be one stick of RAM soldered on with any laptop, but I am not bothering to research it. you could still certainly upgrade but if there is a soldered on stick and even if the other slot is full, it will be doable. Just won't be matched.
