What is better for a middle schooler for school online learning, netflix, office apps? This one from Costco or the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15" HD Laptop (i3-1005G1, 8GB, 256GB SSD) $299 from Walmart? Looking for your guidance, expertise. Thank you.

Will this work for my grandma who wants to do Skype and is writing a novel in Word? She wants to make sure it has enough ram and hard drive space.

Kind of in the same boat as you. However, that walmart one has a terrible display (so the reviews say). not 1080p and bad lighting. I'm going to pass on it.

1) Can you buy now and then get a refund for the lower price?

2) What's the deal with Costco and a better warranty?

Yes. But she'll have to be mindful of open browser tabs, as well as open applications. Otherwise, for basics, it's just fine.

If that novel is being done local make sure to have a backup to One Drive.

Who wants to pay $200 extra? Will be a touchscreen at this price eventually.
Eventually when? How many months from now? What good is that if you need something soon?

Should be sufficient for 99% of the people. Too bad it doesn't have a touch screen, otherwise I'll be all in
It's bad enough I have to touch my smart phone.. I actually turned off the touch capability on my Dell XPS 13.. I hate touch on laptops... it's a personal preference, of course.

Holy crap:
  • 1920x1080 (not 768p) IPS (not TN) Screen
  • 10th gen Intel CPU (not 8th)
  • 8GB RAM (not 4GB)
  • 256GB (not 128GB) SSD (not a HDD)
  • Backlit (as opposed to non-) keyboard
  • 2x2 Wireless card (not 1x1)
  • Not too heavy
  • Good battery life
Are there any other checkboxes even left to hit at THIS price? Confused
USB-C charging, touch & non-glossy screen. That would be the winner!

How do the built-in 3D gaming/graphics on this i5 compare to a Ryzen 3 or 5? I'm pretty happy with my Ryzen 3 (3200U) Acer laptop from last Prime Day, would this be comparable?

I also got the same Acer 3 Ryzen 7 laptop. I have liked it so far, but I haven't had a new laptop in about 3 years (coming from first gen Surface Book which was starting to slow down noticeably).

What about the Acer 3 are you not liking? I've really enjoyed how 'zippy' it is and that it plays DOTA2 really well. But since I haven't tried out other modern laptops at lower price points, I"m not sure if I'd already get that same performance with something like this deal?

Not quite in the Thin & Ultralight category, but close.

I just purchased an Acer Swift 3 (Ryzen 7). Not too happy with it. If I return it, this HP Notebook deal is at the top of my list of contenders.
