https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-1...Id=6403440 - is this better deal? i heard amd athlon is better than i3-10. price is close to 120$ less then this listed model.
Seems like the i3 is 9-10% better on certain metrics:

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Com...8vsm968952

The athlon is better on *none* of the metrics, but the price is lower, the ram is halved, the chassis is plastic, no backlit keyboard, 1366 x 768 screen, and I'm sure there are other areas of worsening

I also got the same Acer 3 Ryzen 7 laptop. I have liked it so far, but I haven't had a new laptop in about 3 years (coming from first gen Surface Book which was starting to slow down noticeably).

What about the Acer 3 are you not liking? I've really enjoyed how 'zippy' it is and that it plays DOTA2 really well. But since I haven't tried out other modern laptops at lower price points, I"m not sure if I'd already get that same performance with something like this deal?
The Acer Swift 3 is a really nice laptop. A feature-rich powerhouse packed in a small form factor, 2.65 lbs. and measures 12.73 x 8.62 x 0.63 inches.

I have two problems with it:

1. I don't like the keyboard. I find the individual keys to be too flat and too smooth. The layout of the keyboard (size, spacing and location of various keys that I'm used to) not to my liking. The key travel and tactile feedback are not to my liking. The silver keys on silver background keyboard doesn't provide sufficient contrast. The lettering and backlighting are a little too subtle for my tastes. I was surprised by how much I initially hated the keyboard. That alone made me want to return the laptop. However, in the few days of use, I'm slowly getting accustomed to typing on it. I can almost touch-type on it now. Still... Cool2

2. Acer's warranty is horrible. For the sake of comparing it with other laptops, I've totally discounted it. For details see my previous post.

Except for these two issues, the Acer Swift 3 (Ryzen 7) is a great fit for me.

FYI we just tried to use the Costco Concierge extended warranty for an Acer soon we bought Jan 28 2018.

Spent hours waiting on hold for Costco Concierge only to be told that the warranty is thru Citi not them, Called Citi, they directed me back to Costco. 2nd call to Costco after hours on hold again, finally find out there is a form you fill out and send to Citi. Sent form, few days later get a response that need a repair estimate. Call Costco Concierge again, yup, hours waiting on hold. Finally get thru, told to call Acer, called Acer and was told since outside the Acer warranty it would be $449 for them just to receive the laptop and assess what was wrong. Sent that email to Citi as repair estimate, nope, not good enough, got response back that they require a detailed breakdown and parts and labor cost. Gave up at that point. From our experience the 2+2 warranty is useless and false.

I regularly use really garbage laptop keyboards, and I can vouch that you get used to them really well after a couple weeks. I type faster on low-end keyboards at this point just because I'm used to them. It's usually like that.

Just something you can consider. If that's your only problem with it, I mean. Smilie

Thanks for the additional feedback. I purchased the 4year Asurion protection plan for the added $130 so I am not as concerned about the shitty manufacturer warranty. In general I've never found myself able to claim a standard warranty for anything useful because of all those crappy terms you just mentioned (aside from Costco which is great).

Any comment on the zippiness and whether this is exceptional in the swift 3 or pretty standard for new laptops these days?

I'm considering returning and getting a new laptop if I could either:

1) downgrade to another cheaper system if the performance of browsing on Edge (Chromium version) or Chrome, plus light Dota2 gaming, is preserved and it has 256gb (preferably 512gb ssd). I keep a lot of tabs open lol.

Or

2) I've been looking for whether a deal comes up with Ryzen 4700U + 16gb or upgradeable ram slot + 512gb ss in the same price point (650-700). My concern w swift 3 is if it doesn't really last 4 years because ram is capped at 8gb (not for games, just day to day analyst on a computer type of work)

Has anyone found anything indicating level of difficulty (if even possible) to upgrade memory on this? I'm thinking the laptop is similar to previous model (which looks like a pain), but can't find anything confirming...

Take the RAM back out and leave it exactly as you found it... they'll never know 😏
