The ID system is a lot of fun, just got my son one for his birthday. Cars stay on the track once you get the boost speeds down and the ID app has lots of challenges and modes so it doesn't get too repetitious.

Batman, BTTF Time Vehicle, newer Mustang, etc..
Connects to an app with a chip / scanner on the underside. I haven't gotten one yet, but it seems like there's more involved than the standard die cast card versions (which have been closer to $1 any time recently).
I don't have the track or portal. As long as your phone or tablet has NFC,you just down load the ID app,and then scan the cars into the game.Thats what I do.Kinda cool racing the cars in the app..I'm to cheap to buy the track or portal..lol..hope that helped..
