Ends up costing around $25.83 shipped to the Orange County CA area. Currently on Amazon these are $27. According to CCC lowest price has been $24.99. So not a bad deal especially if you can get free shipping - maybe add two of these plus a filler? Or three of them? These are great reels for freshwater - trout and bass. 2500 is the biggest I'd go for trout - 1000 or 500 is the 'norm' in most cases but 2500 is a good crossover.
For saltwater, I'd be careful - I realize these are cheap and replaceable reels but it sucks when you're using the reel and mid-session or at the end it seizes up because of a tiny grain of sand that got into the rotor or gear box. So if using this around sand be careful with it and avoid dropping it or dunking it. It's probably OK if it gets submerged but I'd try to rinse it with freshwater ASAP. In fact, any time you end up using this to fish saltwater, I'd highly recommend rinsing it off after - tighten down the drag and rinse the spool but not with too high of pressure. Then after rinsing loosen the drag up and let it dry.
If you're looking to fish primarily saltwater, I'd consider getting a reel that's more intended for it - at least something that has a sealed drag and even better fully sealed (Penn Spinfisher VI or Slammer III for example).
Lol. True story offspring song was playing at the time I read this
Yeah I read an earlier post that these were very close in price compared to amazon. When taking into account 5% back on prime visa the difference was negligible
Ive been looking for this "reel on top" configuration for a long time for my brother in law... It's the only way he does it. Hes a smart lawyer. Cracks me up every time I watch him reel in his senko on a catfish hook directly snapped onto a swivel snap. Turning the handle backwards. At least hes not retrieving it under a bobber.

I might be crazy, but I think it's designed to be used upside down on a spincasting/casting rod? Spincast is what they call those old zebco enclosed reels with the red button, and they also cast from the top. It's a separate category from either spinning or casting.
A weird aside? I found a how-to-fish video on YouTube where a fish and game official in, like, Wisconsin teaches a spinning-reel-on-top cast.
Never fished before and wanted to pick up a ugly stik gx2 rod and this reel to pair for fresh water fishing in Washington state. Having no knowledge of fishing, would this combo be a good place to start?
Also, any recommendations about line? Links or info on bait or lures, lines for freshwater fishing?
