The heatsink version has a different firmware which leads to slightly improved sustained operation performance.

It's not going to be noticed in everyday use though. Buhhh.. The heatsink still looks cool. way cooler than most aftermarket sinks.

Do know that it is difficult to remove, and can risk damaging the pcb, Some batches use extremely sticky tape, other batches pop right off.
Nah, as long as the average user means not hammering the drive. I run VM's and several other things off mine and haven't had any issues without a heatsink.

How does this compare to the Samsung EVO 970 1TB NVMe?

The two are very close in most benchmarks https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...608-3.html

Just wondering if the heat sink is needed for an average user?

I purchased without the heatsink in April for ~ $120 and havent had or seen any issues.
For this price, I likely would have ordered this if it was available though.

This is a great product so far. I have had 1 for since Black Friday. Easy installation and great benchmarks. Heatsink is a must on my Gigabyte motherboard due to location.

Best price available for this ATM. I bought The version without the heat sink two days ago for $134 FWIW. You need to register a new account as it adds additional % off. So if you log in with an old account it will be more.

Yes and all the time in my opinion. In simple words, an M2 SSD heatsink would significantly improve performance(on longer W/R task) and longevity(NAND flash lifespan measured at the best condition at 40 degrees celsius). That is the reason why most MB manufacture added a heatsink to at least one slot, at their mid to high-end MB. For my personal example, I got a PM981a previous staples deal, installed an EK heatsink at my test result is the best (379%) in UserBenchmark.

I'm guessing with the size of that heat sink, this wouldn't really fit in a laptop?

Not sure about the new account clause, I've had a WD account for months (that I haven't used before) and I'm getting the same price - minus sales tax.

I would. I returned mine and got one with a heatsink.
