WD external portable drives typically have the USB 3 board instead of the SATA one.
Of course removing the drive from the case voids the warranty.

In many instances I've read, HDD makers (WD & Seagate specifically) will sometimes honor their warranty even if sent a bare drive, but I wouldn't bank on that. Just keep the enclosure.
This "My Passport" drive, of course, isn't shuckable though, no SATA connections on the bare drive. I think this is most common with 2.5" drives. Most external 3.5" drives I've dealt with are shuckable, but google specific model numbers to be sure before buying.
