I have been using my promo in the Little Saigon area also. There are several Vietnamese grocery stores on the list along with my favorite Vietnamese sandwich shop. Just love those banh mi thit sub sandwiches. The neat thing about the sandwiches is it comes to exactly $10 after tax, so it is like getting a BOGO deal in the end.

I used credit card at all stores I shop at. whether it's 5 cents, $5 or $50.

I stopped at a [chain] food place in Montreal, Canada. I ordered, then pulled out my CC to pay. They said cash only (not sure if there was a sign). I said cancel the order (they hadn't started it yet). I did not have any Canadian dollars. They wanted to do 1:1 USD ... um. no thanks, not paying 25-30% more. They finally gave in and pulled out a credit card handheld terminal that was tucked away on a shelf.

Most of the places I shop accept amex (grocery stores and fast food joint has contact less payment).

It is what it is. A small grocery place can not compete with Walmart on economies of scale for ex. You pay more usually at your local 7-11 to get a gallon of milk than you would at a Walmart, but you pay the extra for the convenience of not having to go to the Walmart and walk through an entire warehouse to get a gallon of milk. Same for the bagel shop which also likely makes better bagels. Outside of food, there really is no reason to even walk into a store imo, but that is me.
As to the fees, like with any business expense, it is passed on to the customer. Merchants that don't want the added expense simply do not sign up to accept the card and go with Visa, MC or Discover or do not accept credit cards at all. There is a reason why many small businesses will give you a discount for cash. Namely it costs them less (no CC processing fees) and let's be honest, they can hide the income off the books more easily.
