I would guess Christmas gifts and general remorse. I think the novelty quickly wears off and then you're left with the post-coital clarity that you just spent $60 or $80 bucks on a one-time fix on something that reminded you of that lost love from childhood but isn't what you actually needed to be happy.
I've spent much more for much less post coital bliss.
Finally got a SNES Classic to go along with my NES! THANK YOU OP!!!

Man, this is really a seller's market. Nintendo is making a killing. Only $10 below the price for new two years ago when there was plenty in stock on BF.

I wonder why they have so many returns on these. It's not a bad product. You get what you see.

I don't know about calling the Super Nintendo Classic superior. Because of the size of the ROMs vs onboard memory you can't fit the entire collection on the Super Nintendo Classic. However on the NES Classic you can most certainly fit the entire Nintendo NES collection.

I'd say it has more to do with how overbought and overproduced these things were. There was serious mania when they originally came out. People were hoarding them and trying to flip. I'm sure some of these aspiring resellers just returned the ones they couldn't turn around within their 30 day return period and all that stock just went right back to Nintendo.

I've bought several refurbished systems from the Nintendo store. They all looked new and just repackaged in a generic box. I wouldn't hesitate to buy refurbished from the Nintendo store.

You can add a USB drive to either one, and load all the games you want. And you can add entire different emulators to play multiple systems. I would call the SNES one superior because it has more buttons on the controllers. I.e. you can easily play any NES game with an SNES controller, but the reverse is not true. Plus the SNES classic has 2 controllers not just 1.
