laptops in general can't compete with phone brightness - my phone's peak brightness is over 770 nits, for example.

Thank for your input and that has to be why it seemed so dark. Looking at an OLED screen phone brightness all day then switching to the laptop was rough. You're correct at night when I did some light gaming on it, it was fine.
