Why do they solder one of the RAM slots? Does that make the laptop obsolete quicker?

No, Just limits your laptop from being upgraded so Lenovo can sell you a more expensive laptop with more memory to fit your needs and desires. So, in other words, it's just marketing and sales strategy.

What makes the Dell attractive? Looks like differences are:
- 16gb ram vs 8gb ram (1 soldered, 1 swappable)
- 15.4" screen vs 17" screen
- 3.6Ghz CPU vs 4.2Ghz
- $430 vs $500 (unless you have Amex $120 off 600)

I guess it's cheaper with some tradeoffs or is there something Im missing?

Just beware that the Dell is a doorbuster, which means there will be a limited amount available an no guarantee you will get it.

Yep that's exactly correct just looking at price with trade offs.

Am I missing something? Both the Lenovo and Dell are advertised with 8MB RAM. Where do you see 16?

Nice unit. Was close to pulling trigger but no backlit keyboard...
This is a deal-breaker for me too. Within 5 minutes of using a laptop with a backlit keyboard, you will never want one without.
