I was going to grab one of these but was scared off by lots of apparent quality control issues...rusting, faulty controllers, peeling paint (that potentially gets into food), etc.
Passing through downey (but not familiar with the area). Which zip code is that i Googled it and typed 90242 but don't see a downey walmart. Also, how many left? Driving from San Francisco and won't be there in a few more hours.

Oh ok ill give it a shot. Thanks for responding!
E: Store display the only one left. unfortunately I brought my model 3 which wouldn't have fit the assembled grill so I left the store crying. $300 price confirmed.
Got one display unit with a oneside of the handle broken at $250 North Houston, fired it up right away, man this thing is awesome, right after seasoning the grill, put in a picanha, cooked reverse seared, never got this level of smoke flavor from any of my grills/smokers before, Thanks once again OP you've opened up a new era of grilling for me
If you want Deep smoke BBQ flavor with similar convenience to pellet grill, and ability to sear, this is the way to go.
I switched from my pellet grill after my first cook. My wife and I noticed flavor increase instantly. The ability to add wood chunks in to the charcoal hopper, and the ash bin makes for a ton of flavor, if that's what you are going for, or more mild by leaving wood out completely.

I've been lucky. Going on 6 years with my 40 inch Masterbuilt which has sat outside the entire time. I use Amazn Smoke instead of its box for much better results.
I've had this smoker for several months now. Sold my pellet grill for this and it blows the pellet grills out of the water with the flavor it produces. Seriously, if you're looking for set it and forget it BBQ, this thing reigns supreme at the moment. Pellet grills do not come within 10 miles of this thing in regards to actual smoke flavor.
There is some truth to the quality of this product. I would buy it knowing two things:
1) You probably want the exhaust cover with the drip guard to prevent flare-ups. I think I paid like $90 for it and I've never had a flare-up with it.
2) The firebox quality, IMO, is a vastly overblown issue. Yes, the inside metal lining of the firebox will break down after not too long. This isn't terribly surprising since it's probably a thousand degrees of flaming and smoldering charcoal burning constantly. What I've yet to ever see be reported, however, is the fire actually breaking through the fire barrier beneath the metal. And if/when it does, it's $30 to replace the entire set from MB. Not exactly the end of the world. As I said, I've had mine for several months (since Feb) and I would say 70% of the metal is worn off, but the material underneath it is probably 99% intact. And I cook on this thing 3-5 times a week, every single week. I would estimate that the firebox will last at least 2-3 years, and as I mentioned, it's $30 to replace it when it does fail.
Overall, I love this thing. If it gets clearanced to ~$250 at WM, I will buy a second one. I paid full price for mine and no regrets. I made a similar comment to this in a pellet grill thread and someone called me a MB employee lol. I do not work for them, but I do think they put out a great product *for the price*.
Do you have a link to the exhaust cover? I have been using magnets and aluminum foil which work pretty well but I just did a rib cook where I cranked it up to 500 to finish them off after 5 hours and had big time flare ups with my foil cover.

Looks like it is actually cheaper than I remembered:
Anyone who has one of these also run (now or in the past) an Egg-style? I have an egg with a FlameBoss controller...wondering if getting the 1050 is better?
I have no affiliation with the guy, but I do use that cover and it works well.
Thanks a lot. I absolutely love this grill and convinced my dad and brother in law to get one. I was able to price match a 15% off coupon from Ace Hardware at Home Depot and go home with a prebuilt one for $425. I am about 8 cooks in on mine. Your information on the potential Hoppe replacement is also super helpful as I was kind of bummed seeing the issues amazingribs had.

10 years ago I was the only slickdealer in the area, but now I do run into the "somebody just bought the last ones" within 30 minutes of me showing up, lol.
That's different than the typical Brickseek issue people have in which it says there is stock when there never really was.
