Lots of fillers on this set. Over 50% are bits and hex keys.

Looks like the Home Depot box for the same price is the better deal, has more sockets and wrenches.

Mechanics tool set? LOL The ratchets are nice, but everything else? Not much value there.

If you're not a mechanic, can this still be useful to you or do you not need most of this?

I'd say this is actually more useful if you're not a mechanic. You may not have a good screwdriver set and have a need for all the bits that is filler in this set. With that said, the Home depot set mentioned above is still a better set for a non-mechanic.

It's a decent set. I have the 227 piece one that comes in the same case that I got at a slick $37 back when that deal happened. You can assume about 100 pieces of this are filler and another 20-30 are hex and torx sockets (which can be a pro if you work on euro cars). The ratchets are nice, the sockets are solid if 12 point. It's a decent set at this price for someone doing basic auto work or needing a starter socket set. The case is kinda junky and flexes so the drawers jam, but all in all I like it (it's my spare take to the track set). If you need it now or soon it's a good deal, but you can probably find slicker if you wait.

You mean 227 piece, and 34.98. I remember that price mistake. Probably won't happen again. It is a better deal for the normal sale price of $100. That set is $200 now.

Back to the currently advertised set, there are better sets to have given the price point. Too many fillers.

I said 227 and it was 37 for me with tax. I agree it probably won't happen again, but That doesn't change anything I said.

I am not a mechanic at all, so I have no idea the difference between Lowes and HD sets. Can someone explain how is the HD set better?

Look at the components of each and you decide. The HD set has 4 more sockets (WOW) and 4 more wrenches (OK - bigger deal but both are light on wrenches). The Lowes set has 80 more "items" - most of which are screw driver related (some call that "filler" but I never seem to miss a week on SD without someone posting yet another "filler" deal that generates tons of posts) . Maybe that is exactly what you need or would use or maybe you would use the HD stuff more or maybe neither are a good deal for you. Both are "starter/splatter sets" and may or may not be what you are looking for. To say the HD set is 'way better' is just an opinion but that is all this site is, of course.
