I was just looking at this in the store today and also saw the student deal for the HP x360 14 for $499 that seems to have the same specs I think, minus the 4K display and overall design. I ordered both to figure out which I'll keep, but am I missing why the Spectre costs so much more?

I think you're referring to the x360 Pavillion, which is built like crap and breaks down randomly after a few months of use. Additionally, poor display, no USB-C charging, not-as-good trackpad, much worse keyboard, etc.
The Spectre is a far better buy at this price. Main issue is non-upgradeable RAM (8gb is basically minimum nowadays) and very difficult to upgrade SSD (need to peel off the aluminum plate covering the SSD)

I'd stay away due to the ram. You can barely do anything with 8gb these days

Either you need your eyes checked or looked at the wrong laptop. The Spectre is unlike anything else out right now, the gem cut, those angles, just the color alone looks like something from the future, rose gold accents on the dark charcoal, sick!

I've been eyeing this laptop since it came out, though I really want the i7 with the oled. Laptop looks great.

The processor and ram combo will be much faster on the c940. I saw them both in person and they both have an ultra premium feel and look. I am waiting for the c940 to go back on sale because of the added processing power. It should also have better battery life with the non-4K screen.

Thanks! You mean the processor and ram would be much better on the c940?

Correct, I edited after I realized the ambiguity.

I have an earlier version of this PC. It was fantastic until the screen gave out. They are prone to a short in the wiring to the video which causes vertical light bars and screen freeze. Heat expansion and flakiness in the hinges seem to be the root cause, but the fix is pricey (new screen). I'm still using it, but only with external monitors -- a pain for an otherwise beautiful laptop. I don't know if they've fixed this issue in more recent models, but buyer beware.

It is (unlike anything else out), and that's one of the reason's I didn't buy it. To each there own , but guess I fall into the camp that thinks the look is a bit...odd. And overall, bang for the buck...the Spectre is just ok. Which is why I went with the recent C940 deal, better built machine overall (plus i7/12 gb) for $50-$100 more. Or, if you're hell bent on getting an HP, I'd check out the deal on the Envy 13, which I'd take over the Spectre due to its spec/performance (ryzen 7/16gb/512ssd)...even if they did 'look the same'.
