The Crucial P2 is an entry-level drive designed for end-users who want to leverage the NVMe technology in a very affordable way, specifically those building a new system or upgrading their old SATA-based one. Compared to the new P5 model (which focuses more on the graphic designer and gamer demo), the P2 is more in line with daily computing needs. Moreover, while its predecessor shipped with QLC, Micron decided to go more on a performance-focused route by equipping the P2 with TLC 3D NAND technology. Currently, it only comes in capacities of 250GB and 500GB.

There were no surprises with its performance results during our tests, showing very weak write activity across the board. Highlights include: 228,048 IOPS in 4K read, 58,355 IOPS in 4K write, 1.34GB/s in 64K read, and 311MB/s in 64K write. In our VDI Clone, we saw 51,084 IOPS in boot, 13,937 IOPS in initial login, and 16,700 IOPS in Monday login.

Though the P2 is one of the more weak-performing TLC-based consumer SSDs we've seen, in the end, Crucial achieved exactly what it set out to do: create an ultra-affordable NVMe drive that is priced at the expense of write performance. In any case, you will certainly see an overall improvement in system performance compared to a SATA SSD or an HDD if you install your OS on the Crucial P2 NVMe SSD. If you value cost over everything else or if you're on a strict budget, the P2 is definitely a viable option as a starter drive.

even the slowest ssd will be faster than fastest hdd. you should be focused on endurance/quality rather than performance at this point.
My two cents: never cheap out on primary storage. Never. Get the best quality and reliability model on a fire deal, even if it costs you extra. Losing your data could cost you manifolds.

Guess I had three cents after all.

I am very new to computer upgrades and thinking to replace my HDD. My laptop supports NVME. Should I get 500GB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD or this deal NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. My concern is that according to OP's wiki "P2 is one of the more weak-performing TLC-based consumer SSDs"

Thank you.

Generally speaking, if you can afford the Samsung drives they're better performing and have a great SSD management suite. On the other hand, the P2 is hot trash, but it's cheap. And if you're happy on an HDD, you'd be thrilled with the P2 probably.

little confused here - you have a laptop that supports nvme but you're running off of a hard drive? if that's the case, then any SSD (including this one) will be a huge improvement.

for daily uses, you won't notice a performance difference between the various SSDs. but for people who transfer large data quite often (for example, youtubers that record in 4k video), they can definitely take advantage of the faster sequential write speeds.

this will probably perform better than your HDD so if you're looking to get better performance this would do that and you can keep your current HDD for extra storage space while running your system on the P2.

so better performance and extra space for your computer if you needed it.

Did they make this somehow worse than the QLC-based Crucial P1? Legitimate question.

It's DRAMless, so random read/writes take a hit, and it relies on Windows 10's HMB (host memory buffer) to map its contents. Marginally better endurance and sustained writes over the P1, which wont matter once its tiny SLC cache overflows.

I bought the Crucial P2 500GB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD last week for the purpose of dual booting.
It took me less then 8 minutes to clone my old drive into this one and now i'm running Windows 10 & Linux. Wave
