Finally an 8 TB deal! With the 5% off PayPal with Discover, I got close enough to the $15/TB line to jump on it. Now to decide if I upgrade the Synology at the same time or stick with my 2016 unit...

Depends on your patience and the game engine.

I've only recently found that I need to upgrade from the 2 TB internal drive I have. I was surprised at having trouble finding deals on a larger capacity internal drive when searching SD so yeah - any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

If it is in an enclosure like this, it is shuckable. 99% of the time

These are very easy to shuck. A few pieces of thin plastic (I use a cut up credit card) to pop the clips and everything slides apart.

The only thing to be aware of is the 3.3v pin issue (Google it), but there are a number of simple and inexpensive solutions for that. A molex > sata power adapter is easier, but a well placed piece of tape does the trick too.

technically you can. just the loading times will be significantly longer as opposed to installing on an ssd. this i believe is 5400 rpm. generally speaking, if a game is very large and poorly optimized (cough fallout 4), you'll have plenty of time for bathroom breaks.

if you do need a drive of this capacity and want to install games on it, if your motherboard supports optane drives, you could technically stick in an optane drive and configure it for your storage drive. that should help pretty significantly.

otherwise, my personal recommendation is if you just need a game drive, stick in a 1tb ssd (sata is fine) and install games on there (and uninstall whatever you don't play anymore).

Yes and you may need to get a molex to sata cable to power it up. These won't be detected unless you cover the 3rd pin. It's too much work if you try to tape it and stuff. I found it easier to buy a molex to sata cable.
