They should have added 16gb ram and 256GB SSD storage as user can replace the storage anytime and cannot upgrade RAM as it's soldered.

Might as well say "bricked."

On one hand I understand it's to keep the price down. On the other 8 limits the long-term usefulness. Even in the short term it's a possible wonky user experience. "Here's your new machine. Now wait while we make you hate our brand."

Soldering only 8 is silly. Soldering is to squeeze out some performance, right? What kinda performance can get out of only 8??

Fwiw, they also apparently do discounts for doctors and teachers! I didn't realize. Thanks!

No soldering so they save a buck or two on not installing SODIMM socket, with as much MSRN price that they claim system costs it's just shows their greed.

If in 1 of 5 it leads to disappointment (in short term performance or long term upgrade ability), how is losing 20% of your customer a smart move? Even 1 in 10 is 10%.

Greed? How about stupid.

Soldering discussion aside, this appears to fill a niche:

compared to fp 599 flex 5 benchmark deal you get:

+better touch display
+better build (abs/aluminum vs abs/plastic on flex)
+/-perhaps more durable hinge, but lose the 360
-half the ram
-no pen included
+double storage
+bigger display but roughly same weight (3.7 vs 3.6)
+slightly cheaper

this is not a glamorous deal but for anyone looking for a decent 15 inch touch display married to 4500u, its all there is (I believe) and the price is reasonable. Compared to the other FP i7 deal for 650 from staples, this has a roughly equal CPU, better gaming performance, half the ram, equal storage, and a much better display with added touch, for $70 less. For people who need and all-arounder with touch and can live with 8gb ram, this is solid imo. I'm considering this as a probably more durable alternative to the flex 5 deal.

are we certain a stick can't be added to make it 16? Anyone know if the 8 is running dual channel? Psref doesn't clarify this.

They are not here to help you. They at here to make $$. They know you will pay 100 bucks more for another 8gb ram.

Unfortunately that's not even an option here -- they I think are just betting that 8 is enough for 95% of users. I'm sure their internal numbers support that idea. Some users need more though.

8 gig will be eaten by chrome like in 10 second. Minimum 12gb these days.

tbh surprised this isn't getting more positive attention, maybe im just a contrarian.

$89 more than the current front page Acer deal, you get a slightly better display with touch, double the storage and a bigger display, of course while accepting 1lb heavier. Also this laptop gets stellar reviews while I'd describe the reviews for the Acer as solid.

The difference between 256 and 512 ssd is roughly $40 alone. If you're looking for a touch screen, to me this is as good as the FP deal.
