Lego City Undercover is a hilarious game with an unexpectedly epic ending. Worth it at this price.
They usually go to around $14 more or less for digital. If you are new to the Switch, I highly recommend that you check out www.dekudeals.com.

Is LEGO City Undercover on Switch make use of the touch screen in handheld mode similar to the Wii U version or is it just like the other ports?

We've played a lot, and I don't recall ever using the touch screen for anything.

we have enjoyed the Ninjago Movie game. Funny and lots to see/do (though you may have to be on tap to help at times).
I've found it useful to have the pro controller, but the normal are fine as well.

I've played most of the Lego games on PC with my kids, pretty much can't go wrong with any of them. Harry Potter is somewhat disappointing because the characters just grunt, but still fun. Jurassic World is pretty cool. Any of the Super Hero ones are enjoyable too. Though the puzzles can be challenging for a 5 year old, they'll need help for sure.

Jurrassic is fun, but Lego City Undercover is way better IMO. Especially playing with a 5yo.

If you have a child ages 6-8, they will play Lego Worlds for hours whilst shouting at each other. It's definitely good for that age group.
