But maybe neither is a good option. Does he want a touchscreen? I would think schoolwork would require a fast processor and a lot of RAM but probably doesn't need much disk space. Definitely don't need a good graphics card unless he is studying video production or something.
My thoughts are the screen is great, it's a thicker laptop and the battery life is just ok, but seeing as it's not using ultraportable parts that makes sense.
Mine had an NVME for the main drive and then an empty 2.5", this should to. I added a 500GB SSD to compliment it and another 8GB of ram.
I actually am using it as my main computer now *however* last week it just randomly started sleeping during gameplay. I'm gonna try reinstalling windows to have a fresh install and see if it stops but may be opening a ticket to Asus.
Overall I am still happy with it even with the weird bug I'm getting, but for $500 you won't find a better specd gaming laptop
