I was just at the local Costco and saw that the beef tenderloin filet mignon is $9.99/lb. One of the workers at the meat department said that he doesn't know why it is so cheap, but it's currently selling for that price (no coupons, special mark downs, etc.)

Perfect example of the terrible prices at Costco. This is regularly on sale at normal supermarkets for $6-9/lb. This isn't even prime. Simply awful
No it isnt. It is normally 13-15.99/lb here in supermarkets

In new York, Australian tenderloin is 10.99 REGULAR PRICE in ShopRite right now. USDA choice 16.99 regular price. The sale prices are regularly 6.99 - 8.99 anywhere other than whole foods, Costco, or the Italian markets. I buy them every couple months. I'd never pay $10 for choice. Well maybe when inflation ravages the economy. Last week the angus prime Porter was 11.99 lb. And orders of magnitude more marbled than this stuff.

I just paid $5.79 lb at Winco in Vegas. I bought a lot at that price and so far they were fantastic!

I picked up a few beautiful Prime tri tips at Costco for $9.xx lb over the weekend. I usually buy choice untrimmed when it goes on sale preferably at Stater Bros. Since it wasn't discounted anywhere this week the Costco price for Prime was lower than a few stores Choice. The meat tasted amazing. My only complaint is the same for almost all store trimmed tri tips. The fat cap was completely removed instead of trimmed low like I prefer.

Thinking the same. In my area Costco has packages of usually 4 prime filets for $14.99/lb so would rather go with that.
That's 50% more than the Choice price. Quite a big difference in price.

I've had prime grade and also choice grade for the filet. I don't find too much difference in the taste or the texture to justify the much higher price. For other cuts where marbling makes a huge difference like the brisket, sirloin, NY strip the difference is night and day.

Bought two of these from Costco for Christmas dinner this past year (choice tenderloins)... cooked in the sous vide and finished on the grill. It's the only time I've seen members of my family take pictures of their food... it was that good.

If you are one of the lucky few to live in a city with a US Foods Chef Store, they have had tenderloin for between $6.79-9.50/lb over the last few months.

Charlotte, NC
Columbia, SC
Oklahoma City, OK
Tempe, AZ
Dallas, TX
Charleston, SC
Myrtle Beach, SC

We buy from several food suppliers for our food businesses, so these prices aren't crazy deals for us, but the Chef Store locations will allow walk-in customers, so you get access to distributor prices with no minimums or other requirements.

I went yesterday and mine said in store only in San Jose.

Choice:
$7.99 in the bag
$9.99 as steaks

Prime:
Extreme pealed in bag for $19/lb
Can't remember the pre-cut price.

I opted for a couple of choice steaks and the prime peeled.

I got the choice in the bag last time and after I trimmed it, I wasted about 30 minutes and had a bunch of scraps left.
