You blow it out before you put it in your pocket. It's basically a catalytic converter that converts the fuel to exhaust and heat without a flame. I had one but I didn't like it because it smelled like lighter fluid when I used it.

REI has a rechargable one on clearance for $10 but there is shipping on under $50

https://www.rei.com/product/161521/zippo-heatbank-3-rechargeable-hand-warmer

Clearance only on silver.

Edit: it's out of stock now.
Got one a couple years ago for going out to football games during winter time here in Michigan. It's not the easiest thing to light up and/or be sure it's lit. I figured out if in a completely dark room you can actually see the catalytic element turning red once lit so I always do it before leaving the house. Useful little gadget with some caveats.
I use mine every winter, it's great for any outdoor activity. A must have for tailgating at football games. Turn it on and it lasts the whole day. There is no active flame. Once it's on though, you have to let it use up the fuel. They give you a pour funnel. Half for 4 hrs. Full for 8 hrs. I was a skeptic, but it works great and doesn't produce the waste of those one time hand warmers.

Wife got me one of these a few years ago. Stays warm for at least 8 hours. I would pick one up at this price. Great for hunting, football games etc.

Hmmm...so you actually light this on fire and put it in your pocket???

Seems a little unsafe to me.

Anybody else have & use this?

I had one of these years ago and used it for years. This is a great item and very safe, I would let my 12 YO Grandson use one of these(with Mom's permission).

It's a catalytic burner. So no, there's no open flame. It's quite safe, people have been using these for decades.

people say there's a faint smell , depending on the type of stuff u put in it. Zippo fluid seems to provide the least smell, but costs more

I use electric hand warmers (li ion powered). not as warm, but no smell
