I don't know Verizon's policy, but on Sprint you DO NOT pay activation fee when using Activate Today.
It's possible on some carriers you pay an Activation Fee, but I don't think the other carriers charge it for Activate Today.
Either way you save money.
Best case you save $50, worst case you save $50 and pay $30-$35.
The phone is still Unlocked, and Activate Today is not a payment plan. It's just Best Buy passing kickbacks to you from the money they get from phone activations.
There is a "Verizon Upgrade Fee" of $40. Anyone know how to get that waived? Would it make more sense, less expensive due to activation fees to buy from Google/Amazon then activate?

I haven't heard of being able to get around that activation fee these days. They just slap it on your bill as soon as they see that new device imei getting activated.

Just a reminder that the Pixel 3a unlocked was effectively $100 cheaper within 2 weeks of release (Best Buy / B&H Photo gift cards, I think even Amazon or Google Play had the same deal). Even if the gift card is useless to you, you can sell it on a 3rd party site for probably $85 - $95.
I say if you're wanting to buy it unlocked - HOLD HOLD HOLD. It's not out for 3 more weeks anyway, might as well wait and see if there will be a similar deal as last year.
Low mid-level phone market about to get spicy. I'm excited about this and the Nord. The high-end phone market is no longer exciting or with purchasing from IMO. It just features for the sake of features being added each year now on $800+ phones
I have a cell number on Verizon and also have a google voice number tied to my gmail account. If I configure my gmail account on as the primary on this google phone device, would it still let me keep the two separate? or will it force my device number to also be my google voice number? Maybe a long stretch but still would like to clarify. Anybody with a google device on Verizon know?

Looking at it this way (I was hoping to get it waived) this option isn't worth it to save 10 bucks if you are on VZW.
