Nah, lower SSD and an i7 is the way to go for similar prices.
Maybe for you but that is not similar in price when these are on sale. Plus, the i7 isn't a huge upgrade over the i5 and you are not going to be able to get external storage that will have these speeds.

I was wrong, this is a pretty good deal, I had mixed up specs
Isn't the costco $1099 a much better deal? What are you getting for $500 more? 256gb of storage? Not worth IMO!
10th Gen i5 vs 8th Gen i5
16GB RAM vs 8GB RAM
512 SSD vs 256 SSD
better speaker output
4 vs 2 usb ports
2020 MacBook Air will be better choice only if it had better thermals.
A lot of above Pro's depends of specific use cases and for many the 1100 model will be sufficient but generally the higher one is always slightly better.

No that's the last gen revamp, it has a 3 year old CPU half the RAM(slower lpddr3) and half the ssd space. These machines aren't user upgradeable so buy what you see yourself using in the future.

Getting a big spec bump and future proofing with 500 more, twice the ram, i5 10th gen and twice the strorage. If you are a heavy user, programming etc. this is the one to get!

Just in case you can avoid tax or have a B&H card.
Edit that's the 8gb 512gb version

16gb is also more future proof as ram is soldered

The processor generation. Costco is the base version with the 8th generation i5.
