I have this saw and love it. The XPS accuracy system is amazing and it works so simply. It casts a shadow where the blade is going to be so there's no need for a laser and you can see exactly where your cut is going to land. Also this thing is powerful. It used it to blast through solid red oak 4"x 4"s the other day and you could barely tell it was trying.

Get the DWS779 over this in my opinion. You'll regret dropping $300 on a non slider when the time comes and u need to cut a larger piece of wood. Yes this model has the shadow line but after u gain experience of making cuts as a newbie, u won't need the shadow line. If the shadow line is a big deal to u then u can always make your own. YouTube has videos on it.

I have this saw and love it. The XPS accuracy system is amazing and it works so simply. It casts a shadow where the blade is going to be so there's no need for a laser and you can see exactly where your cut is going to land. Also this thing is powerful. It used it to blast through solid red oak 4"x 4"s the other day and you could barely tell it was trying.

I purchased this 2 months a go to re-do a deck and love the XPS line. Also able to cut through a 4x4 post and 2x6 material on a 45 deg in a single cut make a sliding miter saw not necessary. Wish I could have saved the $75, but I needed the saw at the time. Would recommend

I think so, or at least matches it, the previous gen DW716XPS hit $200 a couple of times, but that was probably clearing out inventory for this DWS.

That slider gives you the ability to cut wider pieces, but it lacks the shadow line, is much larger and heavier, takes more space behind it to use, and has more moving parts so isn't as accurate.

Personally I'd always go with a non-slider, as long as it's cut capacity is large enough for the pieces that I really need to miter.

Given 99% of average cutting is outside in the sun where the light guides get washed out, XPS is fancy, but unless you have an inside shop with controlled light it's less impressive. I leaned towards a 12" slider with laser add on ($20 anywhere) that works better in sun. And they make XPS kits if you want to add on later, seems a better route for anyone looking to go the next step above a 7" Ryobi.
edit: also note a slider adds a ton of weight, but worth it once set up. if you're constantly hauling it around for simple 2x4's then a non-slider is fine, but I've used my slider way more than I thought I would.
