To those who say this doesn't work for covid:
Nothing is worse than your CLOTH face mask that is merely a placebo. It doesn't protect yourself nor others.

And this plus P100 would at least protect the wearer. And if the wearer always wear this the wearer is much less likely to get covid. And if the wearer doesn't have covid, it also protects others.

They may help protect you from getting covid but they do not filter the air you exhale so you are pretty much proclaiming that you are a selfish pr&^ck if you wear one of these in public.

All the user needs to do is tape a small piece of coffee filter on the exterior of the exhaust valve, or affix a basic mask over by stringing the earloops over the p100 filters. Ain't rocket science.

Medium is a better fit for most people

Exactly. I have small and it fits perfectly. Large would be humongous. So, medium would be average.

If you really want to go the extra mile, you can cover the exhaust port of your 3m respirator with a piece of surgical mask duck taped over the exhaust outlet on the inside. Then, remove the little rubber gaskets inside where both filters attach. They are only there to direct all your exhaled air out the exhaust port. Without them in place, it will be easier to breathe out since your exhaled air is traveling back out the filters.

All somebody needs to do is duct tape a piece of coffee filter over the exhaust or simply put a mask over it.

If you plan on using this in public you can put a piece of cloth or a regular surgical mask over the exhalation valve and zip tie it in place to protect others.

Beside CDC repeated warning about mask with exhalation valves, many organization and companies don't allow them through policy.

I work for U.S. Army and DoD absolutely forbids masks with valves.

But, can you wear them covered with another mask? Seems logical you could since it's basically the same as wearing a mask without a valve.

These "elastomeric half face respirators" are awesome and a real hidden gem. They are a lot easier to get a good seal and they're one of the very few ways to get real N95 filters without robbing from front line healthcare workers. They're also a lot easier to breathe through and they're designed to be more comfortably worn for long periods. The only drawback to using these is that they do not filter the exhaled breath. (The exhale port can be covered with some DIY filter material, cloth or meltblown material.)

The mask assembly is only part of the system, you'll also want to get cartridges/filters that come in a single unit or a stack of 2-3 pieces. The best ones are a single unit that's encased in plastic. This makes it easier to keep clean and less likely to be handling the nasty part of the filter. The 7093 is actually rated as P100 and is the easiest to breathe through. The other single piece 6000 series ones are good too (no matter how they are labeled for various gasses). These might be restricted to health care people and they are harder to find.

The other filter style that's easier to find comes in 2-3 pieces: a 6000 series base piece (the gas type doesn't matter much), with a separate plastic attachment (Filter Retainer 501) on each cartridge to hold a N95 particulate filter ("3M Particulate Filter 5N11"). If you can find one, there's also a blank cartridge that will hold the N95 filter ("Filter Adapter 603").

3M does make the pink puff ball style filters that are easy to breathe through and are rated N95 but they require more caution when handling because there's no shroud.

Here's an overview of the different systems:

Regarding the exhalation port...
In a perfect world, we'd all have real N95 masks in such abundance that we could put on a fresh one whenever it's required and then just toss it. Frankly, it feels a bit 3rd world that 6+ months in and we're still struggling with this. But, until that day comes, the elastomeric respirator is the next best thing. For most of us, this is about the only way to get a hold of a real N95 (or even N100). Plus, it's economical, comfortable, and easy to get a good seal. The only real downside is that it doesn't filter the exhale. Here's a few thoughts and solutions:
  • Almost all of these half-face respirators have a valve or flap that allows air out but not back in. These valves redirect and disperse the exhaled breath in much the same way as a loose fitting paper mask. Some of these masks, like the 3M 6500 and 7500 series, will redirect all exhalation downward, eliminating most of the risk.
  • 3D printing - Adapters are available to attach a 3rd filter.
  • Add your own 3rd filter - The exhale port can be covered with the same material that might be used to make cloth masks or even use paper mask material. The exhale valve is only about 1" across, so it's simple enough to cover the valve with cloth and tape it down with duct tape. (It was good enough for Apollo 13, so probably good enough here.) Taping on the inside keeps the DIY filter material cleaner. Because the exhale port is so small, the cloth can't be too thick or it becomes difficult to exhale. Taping the DIY material to the outside of the mask makes it a tiny bit easier to breathe through. It's also possible to create a larger pocket for the outside of the mask that can increase the volume which will make it much easier to breathe through, even with superior filter materials like meltblown fabric or Halyard 600. The attached pics show some examples using a 3M 7500 series.

They've admitted they said that to not provoke panic buying of PPE that was already in short supply at hospitals... which definitely isn't great but they've been consistent for decades that nose and mouth coverings are effective in limiting the spread of airborne diseases. Nurses and doctors haven't been putting them on for the last century just for fun.

I'm very glad these have come back into stock for us home DIYers.

We are rebuilding our deck. Between cutting lots of pressure treated wood (harmful dust) and staining cut ends with wood preservative (harmful fumes), I am incredibly grateful to have snagged a set of these with combo gas/particulate filters. Cotton masks and disposable surgical masks just weren't cutting it.

For all of the discussion of whether these help for covid or not, please don't lose site of the intended use for these and know that there are those of us out there that will benefit from them.

Man it was insane trying to do demo on drywall stacking those 3-ply and cloth masks. Didn't catch a whiff of drywall but had to stop for fresh air every 10 mins because of the face sauna we created lol.
