Simple answer? You can't protect against the pen attack. Buy a hardside case without a zipper (uses one or two latches instead). If it's something specific inside your suitcase you're trying to protect, put it in a separate lockbox and then run a cable lock through the frame of the suitcase itself. It'll help..... but ANY security measure you do, you're just buying time. There is no perfect solution to any security measure in any situation.
for those wondering about carry on size

Carry-on luggage size: 22'' x 14'' x 9" max size

This is too big

Any way to protect the zipper? The last time I took a flight when I got to the luggage pickup I think somebody had used a pen to pop open my bag and a few things were missing, how would I protect myself from this?

Good quality bag. I think my dad got this free with a new AAA Bank of America credit card promo last year.

That's true. Keep money and expensive electronics in carry-on/checked bags and always keep an eye on those bags especially when going through security. Another method is to buy an extra cheap tablet/phone/laptop just for travel use with no sensitive information stored.

I got this from the last time I saw this deal and love it. Very lightweight and so far very solid. I think I've taken 5 flights with it. 6th is tomorrow morning. Well worth it.

I think we have one of those. Survived a few trips. My spouse kills suitcases often going developing locations usually toting stuff. I think her record was a trip with 13 suitcases.

Any expensive item, money, passport etc can be placed inside a zippered small "pencil bag" available at Walmart. It is sturdy and large enough to hold all of this. Besides it has a seen on steel ring at one end. Close the zipper, place a lock and keep in the carry on. The TSA people will never open your bag without your consent or you being present close to the bag. Avoid keeling any valuable in the checked in bag. Even if it is a non zippered bag, you cannot lock it.
