New GoPro 9 just came out.

Deal only for this week is $50 off the retail price. Includes 1 year of their subscription unlimited cloud storage, free camera replacement, and 50% off accessories. Also includes a 32gb sd card. This is actually a really good deal considering the camera replacement insurance alone is another $50.

For $50 more they also have a bundle that includes several accessories.

The major changes from the Hero 8 are a front-facing screen (like the DJI), image stabilization now includes horizon stabilization, and it can record up to 5k video (vs. 4k)

I just ordered one and will report back on the real differences.

I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

No additional discount for current GoPro Plus subscriber. Once you login in during checkout they remove the subscription and change the price of the camera from $300 to $350. This sucks for us who are already subscribed but hey I'll just hold on to my Hero 8 for now.

Doesn't look like it is - they are selling a hero9 specific one. I'm guessing the front-facing playback screen is larger than the lcd in the 8.

A few more comments.

Now that I've purchased the camera, and have the "subscription" it looks like all of the accessories are at least 30% off, and two of them are 50% off.

They've changed the battery again. It is not compatible with the 8. Looking at the specs, the 8 battery is 1220mah, and the 9 battery is 1750mah, significantly larger. They are claiming at least 30% more runtime. bummed my old accessories won't work but happy that it is at least for a good reason.

I went on a trip using GoPro 7 and it was a total disaster. The GoPro froze several times when taking videos. I had to pull the battery out each time to reset and lost the footage. Finally ended up using my phone.

I am hoping they fix this issue with the GoPro9.

Mine 7 froze as well while I was waiting in line to zipline in Costa Rica. But I was able to catch the freeze before it was my turn to go. After that, I have read that it is a common issue on all GoPro and might be because it is due to overheating. I hope you are right on fixing the issue as well on the 9.

This has been my biggest issue with the GoPro as well as friends of mine with them. They can be quite quirky and a lot of this appears to be related to compatibility with memory cards. My Hero 6 Black came with a 32GB card. I bought a Lexar 128GB card on the "approved" list but it didn't work correctly and got repurposed in another camera. I think a lot of this mess is related to the card being used. I don't know why they are so picky about cards.

IME, you will know if you have a dud within a few minutes of use. If it works ok it will survive a whole lot. It's sad that qc/manufacturing is so poor though.
