GoPro.com has GoPro HERO9 Black 5K Action Camera w/ 32GB SD Card + 1 Year GoPro Subscription on sale for $349.98. Shipping is free. Thanks SociableFog138
I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.
Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.
Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.
That seems to be the best/safest solution.
Just adding two comments.
First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.
When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.
Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

But does that 30% battery improvement mean that the life of the battery will be shortened? It might not matter with the glut of batteries out there but something to consider.
3. An improved battery life
For generations, GoPro's Hero flagships have sported 1 220mAh batteries. They didn't last long (just over an hour when shooting 4K), but this was largely forgivable due to their compact size. Now, GoPro's bumped up the battery capacity to 1,720mAh on the Hero 9 Black, which it claims boosts its stamina by about 30%.
This results in significantly better performance when capturing Full HD video, with the Hero 9 Black recording for in excess of two hours and 10 minutes in our tests, by comparison to the Hero 8 Black, which died after one hour and 30 minutes.
The bigger battery size also means the Hero 9 Black can handle extreme cold better according to GoPro, so should make for a mightier action camera on the slopes.
On the flip side, we did experience overheating with our Hero 9 when shooting 5K video. After 30 minutes, it powered down and was very hot to the touch, so even if the battery won't hold you back, when shooting at full resolution, the heat might.
Good if you like making videos but for stills not so great..
guess you have to be a social media person with the videos otherwise who's going to want to watch them? hey everybody, wanna come over and watch our videos? right...
pictures aka stills.. easier to share imo. pictures paint a thousand words with a good DSLR..
Wow I just bought the Hero8 not even 2 months ago for the same amount of money.. I feel screwed over by GoPro... and their accessories are really expensive too. FML
It is common knowledge that new gen models debut in September...how could you feel screwed if the same darn thing happens every year...it is not like its a surprise...
Would you feel screwed by Ford for coming out with an upgraded 2021 mustang if you bought your 2020 2 months ago...new models and progress are kind of a requirement for staying in business..
If you feel like you screwed yourself for making your purchase when you did then I get it.
Ooh, I bought Costco's HERO8 bundle[costco.com] a couple weeks ago for $290. A few days later I learned about the HERO9. (This was sort of an impulse buy, not well researched.)
If the HERO9 was $400+ by itself like predicted, it's easier to say no it's not worth the difference. If a similar bundle is $400 including the year of subscription, it's more tempting to return the 8 and upgrade to the 9.
*The Costco bundle includes a case which the HERO9 bundle doesn't, but that's not a dealbreaker.
The front screen is nice, and 20mp photos are a big plus... and "30% more battery life" answers my biggest complaint after a week with the HERO8.
Can you tell me how long of continuous recording you got with the 8 and how much storage it required?
Also, can I connect the camera to an external battery (via USB) and record, or will it not record while "charging"?
How did you find out Samsung memory cards were fake? I recently bought Samsung 256gb card few weeks back from Amazon. So just wanted to make sure it is legit
Several different tests to do depending on ur computer. I've forgotten the name of the program I used to test mine but Holy hell, it was time consuming. :-(
Just bought it.
Now that I have the subscription, I added another in the cart to see if there is any extra discount, and the camera price goes to 349 without any extra year. So the deal is solid.

Damn. So those cards that failed my test could have indeed been legit but just bad cards from Samsung themselves and not fakes... Ugh.
GoPro Hero 10 needs to have dual memory card slots and write to two at the same time for reduancy me thinks.
Curious if GoPro has a sd card recommendation? I had a similar issue with hunting trail cameras, samsung evos had tons of static, saw on their site they recommended sandisk, problem solved..
I went on a trip using GoPro 7 and it was a total disaster. The GoPro froze several times when taking videos. I had to pull the battery out each time to reset and lost the footage. Finally ended up using my phone.
I am hoping they fix this issue with the GoPro9.
Mine 7 froze as well while I was waiting in line to zipline in Costa Rica. But I was able to catch the freeze before it was my turn to go. After that, I have read that it is a common issue on all GoPro and might be because it is due to overheating. I hope you are right on fixing the issue as well on the 9.
Stopped using my GoPro Hero 8 and 7 when I got the Insta360 One X last year and never went back. I'll wait until Insta360 comes out with a new One X model with higher resolution before buying again. The One X is the best camera for snowboarding.
Just had one hour chat with go pro. Apparently, if you do trade up there is no additional $100 discount. So you would get charged $350 (camera and card + subscription) and will have to send your old camera to them. So, do not use trade up. It took so much time to cancel order and subscription to later place another order without trade up.
