I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

Just adding two comments.

First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

How did you determine they were fakes? I have similar issues with my 7 and am using Samsung cards.

I used some type of testing program - I forget what it was called. Basically the program wrote data to the entire card and then re-read the data to check size, speed, and for bad sections. It took freaking forever too. Not an easy test that just takes a few minutes.

Like car parts, never buy an SD card from Amazon. Not worth the risk, always B&M store. Sometimes it pays to not be cheap, but if you can be cheap and pick up at B&M or Online retailer that does not allow 3rd party sellers you are golden.
