Legality is sketchy at best, but I've used Calibre software to "backup" a Kindle book in epub format in the past.

Yes, this. I tried three separate ones and they all had a Kindle price attached to it. What made it almost bad for me is that I have some credits available, so it would show a $0 price, but only after using the credits. If I wasn't paying attention...
