Reservations made using Rapid Rewards points do not qualify for this promotion.
Steps:
- Register for this promotion prior to booking.
- Purchase a new qualifying revenue flight by September 24, 2020 -> Now September 25, 2020. Rapid Rewards account number must be entered at the time of booking.
- Travel must be completed between September 22 and November 15, 2020
- Once you have completed travel, you will receive an email from Southwest that includes information on next steps and how to designate and utilize the Promotional Companion Pass. Southwest intends to send this email to all qualifying Members within 10 days after the Promotional travel period ends on November 15, 2020.
- This pass will allow a companion to fly free with you every time you fly between 1/6/2021 and 2/28/2021.

Flights booked using travel funds (and vouchers) do count as "revenue" flights.
Points bookings, companion pass travel by the companion, and things like buddy passes -- basically anything that doesn't earn points -- do not.

He's wrong. You said you were using travel funds. Those are revenue flights
